Update NIH Design Policy Guidelines (DPG) to Design Requirements Manual (DRM)
- Scope: Define the AE requirements in a publication for architects, engineers, and other professionals to establish design criteria for NIH state-of-the-art biomedical research laboratories and animal research facilities.
- Notable Features: Establish all design criteria to meet a minimum of bio-safety level BSL2 and animal bio-safety level ABSL2 containment and specifically address BSL3 & 4 and ABSL 3 & 4 high containment requirements.
- Project Summary: Alphatec provided total A/E services to assist NIH to establish policy, define design standards and technical criteria for use in planning, programming, and designing new NIH owned biomedical laboratories and animal research facilities, applicable nationwide. Services included architectural and engineering consulting services; technical support and revisions of the DPG; coordination of and information gathering from NIH technical committees as Co-chair of six concurrent multi-disciplinal bi-weekly technical meetings (over two years) and a series of special meetings; technical and non technical editing; and incorporation of technologically advanced and updated information to prepare NIH Design Requirements Manual for Biomedical Laboratories and Animal Research Facilities (DRM). Alphatec assisted NIH in the coordination of partnering efforts among NIH Office of Research Facilities, NIH Division of Policy and Program Assessment, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and the selected representatives from the sector.
